Alaska Permanent Fund dividend (PFD)

FAIRBANKS - And the answer is ... $1,281.

Gov. Sean Parnell announced the amount of the annual Alaska Permanent Fund dividend on Tuesday morning, which is paid out to more than 640,000 eligible Alaskans. The money will be distributed on Oct. 7.

The fund was established in 1976 after North Slope oil was discovered. The dividend is calculated from the five-year average of investments made through the state's $35 billion oil-wealth savings account.

If Alaskans received a dividend every year since the first was distributed in 1982, they will have received a total of $32,193. The 2009 dividend was $1,305.

Alaskans must live in the state one calendar year, and plan to remain in Alaska, to receive the dividend.
