Doordarshan Live Streaming

The Commonwealth Games kicked off Sunday with more than 6,000 athletes from 71 countries in New Delhi, India, but since the United States does not participate, viewers here are scrambling to watch the opening ceremonies on Indian television network Doordarshan, which is live streaming the games.

This is the second time that the games have been held in Asia. Indian President Pratibha Patil announced “Let the games begin” after Prince Charles declared the games open on behalf of his mother, Queen Elizabth II, who did not make the trip.

Doordarshan live streaming has been spotty, however, due to the large number of people logging on to their website to watch the games online. The games, second only to the Olympics are being held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The games had been plagued by difficulties this year, including corruption allegations, construction delays and an extended monsoon season that has created stagnant pools of water in the city, which led to a 30-year-old official with the Indian lawn bowls team to contract mosquito-borne dengue fever.

Swimming is among the sports to start Monday, when the competition begins. There are 17 sports in this year’s games, and 272 gold medals to be won — 143 for men, 123 for women and six in mixed or open competitions.

The closing ceremony is on Oct. 14.
