Univ of Texas incident over...Checking on Carter...Wisc River receding

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A University of Texas professor says a gunman carrying an AK-47 on the Austin campus today had the opportunity to shoot him and several students, but didn't. The man, wearing a ski mask, did fire a number of shots before running into the library. There, he shot himself. Authorities say they believe the gunman was a student at the university and that he had acted alone.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama has called Jimmy Carter to see how he's doing. The 85-year-old former president had a bout of air sickness on a flight from Atlanta to Cleveland today. Rescue crews took Carter off the plane and took him to a Cleveland hospital. His grandson says he's "resting comfortably" and is expected to continue his book tour this week.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Authorities says the swollen Wisconsin River has peaked and should drop by about three feet over the next 24 hours. That will give the neighborhood of Blackhawk Park a chance to recover. The river turned the rural community into an island after floodwaters surged around a sand dike.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A day after thermometer busting heat, temperatures in the Los Angeles area are again approaching triple digits. But forecasters say the high in downtown L.A. should not top 102. Yesterday, the National Weather Service recorded an all-time record high of 113 for the city, at which point the thermometer stopped working.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The body of a New Jersey chef has been found floating in the Hudson River. Joseph Cerniglia had been featured on Gordon Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares" TV show, in which he described being overwhelmed with debt. Authorities say the 39-year-old jumped to his death from the George Washington bridge. They've ruled it a suicide.
