Hoffman, BYU on national TV tonight

Cody Hoffman will have the chance to show off his gridiron skills to a national TV audience tonight.

images Hoffman, a 2009 Del Norte High graduate born and raised in the area, is a redshirt freshman wide receiver at Brigham Young University.

The Cougars face Utah State on the road starting at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Hoffman is currently a starting wideout for the 1-3 Cougars. While BYU has struggled, Hoffman has been a standout with 13 catches for 142 yards and a touchdown. Last week, in a loss to Nevada, Hoffman led the Cougars with 74 yards on four catches. He also returned a kickoff for 31 yards on a reverse.

With his recent strong play Hoffman is gaining more attention in the Utah media.

Both of Salt Lake City’s daily newspapers, the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune, had articles on Hoffman this week that included him coming from a small California costal town.

“In his hometown of Crescent City, Calif. (pop: 7,542), BYU receiver Cody Hoffman is kind of a big deal, although the soft-spoken redshirt freshman would probably be the last person on earth to tell you that,” read the opening paragraph in the Tribune story.

In a Thursday blog by the writer of the Tribune piece, Jay Drew, gave additional quotes from his interview with Hoffman and talked about his brief phone interview with current Del Norte High varsity football coach Ray Rook.

When Hoffman was asked if people back in his hometown were surprised he chose BYU, this is what Hoffman said, according to the blog story:

“No. They are just happy that I am out here and doing good things. They are 100 percent supportive of me,” Hoffman said.
