Little Egg Harbor shooting: 2 dead


 LITTLE EGG HARBOR — The gunman responsible for several shootings in Little Egg Harbor this morning was found dead in a housing unit around 2:20 p.m., according to an official.A man and a woman were confirmed dead at the Tall Timbers condo development, homicide investigators said earlier
A law enforcement officer with knowledge of the situation said the gunman was found dead in a housing unit around 2:20 p.m. He spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the case before a late afternoon news conference.
The victims were identified only as a man and a woman, according to Deputy Chief Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit.
Neighbors stayed locked in their homes earlier today as police searched for ths shooter.
The shooting was reported in the area of Westchester Drive and Whitemarsh Court in the Tall Timbers section before noon. The area surrounding Tall Timbers is a mix of apartments, townhouses and duplexes.
Officers from at least three Route 9 police departments responded to a request for a Special Weapons And Tactics, or SWAT, team.
"Tuckerton police are backing up Little Egg Harbor police," Tuckerton Mayor Lee
Eggert said.
He said he saw Stafford police cars and a Stafford ambulance traveling toward the scene of the shooting.
"We'll do everything we can to give assistance," Eggert said.
Barnegat police responded to the call for SWAT. State Police also were on the scene.

Eyewitnesses describe hearing shots

Jared Golden of West Creek, contacted the Asbury Park Press to report "12 to 15 emergency vehicles, some armored" headed south on Route 539 from Manchester, headed toward Tuckerton.
Little Egg Harbor resident Josh Wirtz, who lives in the Tall Timbers development in Little Egg Harbor, reported hearing multiple shots just after 10 a.m
At first it sounded like a nail gun," Wirtz said. "Then it was like someone banging on the front door. The sound filled the whole area. It started out as a couple
of shots; but then it was more like rapid hits bing, bing, bing, bing."
Neighbor Frank Bauer, 38, of Indian Valley Court said he was told that residents in the area should stay inside their homes.
At around 11:20 a.m., John Molinaro, co-owner of Streamline Auto Body, just off the Garden State Parkway exit to Little Egg Harbor, said he saw large numbers of marked and unmarked police cars rushing to the crime scene.
Noting a patrol car from Jackson Township zooming past his business, he said "This appears to be the most extraordinary police presence at a crime scence since that shootout on Oak Avenue a couple of years ago.''
An Asbury Park Press photographer on the scene reported hearing more gunshots around 1:15 p.m. near a wooded area in the vicinity of the crime scene.
